Our Story

In the mid-1990s, three residents of Cambridge observed a notable absence of regular churchgoers in our vibrant city. These individuals envisioned a church where the Way of Jesus could resonate with those whose last church experience was perhaps in childhood, or even non-existent. With a few like-minded friends, they founded what we now know as Reservoir Church.

Since then, we have strived to be a community deeply rooted in the teachings of Jesus, while remaining culturally relevant and accessible to everyone. We are ecumenical: we aren’t members of a particular denomination or sect but try to draw on the best spirituality and the deepest truths of the Christian faith, in ways that people of any faith or no faith can access. We are contemporary—casual, informal, and warm-hearted. We are diverse: a community of all ages, multiracial, queer and straight, longtime Christians and people that are not especially religious or grew up in other faiths.

A Bit of History

Initially, our church was part of the Vineyard Association, known for its vibrant, contemporary approach to historic faith. Originally named the Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Cambridge, we decided in 2015, after thoughtful discernment, to part ways with the Vineyard/USA association. This decision arose from a growing disconnect and pressure to limit LGBT involvement, a stance we could not support. Embracing our newfound independence, we chose a new name – Reservoir Church. Located near Cambridge’s beautiful city reservoir, we also believe that like a reservoir, we exist as a community of faith, hope, and love (what Jesus called “living water”) that is here for the public good.

The Future of Reservoir

Following our successful 25th anniversary campaign, we are excited to invest in new avenues to love and serve our larger community through our vision of Beloved Community, a local expression of God’s vision for justice and flourishing for all people.,. Reservoir Church is certified as fully inclusive by Church Clarity, and we are proud members of the Post Evangelical Collective and the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization. Our work has been recognized in media outlets like NPR’s All Things Considered and commended by the Massachusetts House of Representatives for our significant contributions to local community life on our 25th anniversary.
